Description
Syagen's Atmospheric Pressure Photoionization source has been developed specifically for the Waters Micromass ZMD, LCT, Quattro Ultima, Quattro Ultima Platinum, Quattro II, QTof I & II "Fishbowl" Z Spray design and Thermo LCQ and Quantum Instruments.
APPI has become the method of choice for many applications because of important advantages over the conventional methods of atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) and electrospray ionization (ESI). The latter methods are based on the charge affinity of analyte molecule (e.g., protonation for positive ionization). Because the affinity for charge can vary widely for different molecules, the ionization efficiencies can likewise vary widely. Competition for charge can also lead to ion suppression. Photoionization works on a different principle. The excitation of a molecule by a photon can directly eject an electron if the photon energy exceeds the ionization potential of the molecule. This process is independent of the surrounding molecules, thereby reducing ion suppression effects.
APPI is also a soft ionization method that minimizes ion fragmentation. APPI is an important complement to ESI and APCI by expanding the range and classes of compounds that can be analyzed, including nonpolar molecules that are not easily ionized by ESI or APCI.
Experience the benefits of APPI and expand the capabilities of your LC/MS systems.
