An Edwards 1.5 roughing pump is used for the initial pumping or roughing out of the probe inlet on the SIS direct probe inlet for the HP 5973 MSD. This pump can be placed either on top of the counter behind the electronics console as shown above or on the floor or some other location close to the MSD. The purpose of this pump is to provide for the preliminary pumping of the valve sealing section of the probe inlet system once the probe has been inserted into the first seal. This will minimize the amount of air that is introduced into the mass spectrometer.

Installation of the Vacuum Pump
The 1/4" I.D. vacuum hose is attached to the pump nipple adaptor using the hose clamp supplied with the system. The pump nipple adaptor is then clamped to the Edwards pump using the centering ring and NW25 clamp. The other end of the vacuum hose is clamped to the vacuum line on the back of the probe inlet system. The vacuum hose should be between 18 inches and 48 inches long. Longer lengths of vacuum hose are not recommended.
