T
he AutoDesorb Cryo-Trap was designed to operate inside
the GC oven for the trapping of volatiles at the front of the
GC column much like the previous models of the Cryo-
Traps that SIS has produced in the past 5 years. The Cryo-Trap con-
sists of a 2.0" long cooling/heating chamber. In the center of the
chamber is a small stainless steel capillary through which the capil-
lary column freely passes. Around the stainless steel capillary tube
a heating coil is wound to provide for the rapid heating of the capil-
lary tube and capillary column. A Thermocouple provides accurate
measurement of both the cooling and heating temperatures.
The same Cryo-trap can be used with either LN
2
or CO
2
.
There
is no need to purchase separate traps or electronics controllers.
Just select the appropriate valve (CO
2
or LN
2
) kit below depending
on the cooling gas you will be using, or if you prefer purchase both
valves to enable the use of the Cryo-Trap with both types of gases.
CO
2
will enable cooling of the Cryo-Trap down to -70° C and LN
will
enable cooling down to -180°C. The AutoDesorb software will detect
the type of valve which is plugged into the controller and control its
operation automatically.
The Cryo-Trap is controlled and operated via the PC software
and electronics console of the AutoDesorb system.
A PC window
is
used to set the cooling and heating temperatures and times, and the
PC window
monitors and plots the actual Cryo-Trap temperatures
during the sample analysis.
The Cryo-Trap was developed specific to the Agilent 7890, 6890
(also Agilent 5890) GC.
It uses a new mount which attaches to the
top of the oven wall around the GC injection port, but the trap or its
mount do not physically touch the injection port.
Therefore there is
no heat drain from the injection port which would impede the GC
Injection port operation.
The 2.0" trap can be used on 0.2, 0.25 and
0.32 mm I.D. capillary columns, and can also be used on megabore
columns or guard columns (0.53mm) provided that the column flow
does not exceed 5.0 ml/minute.
