he new Purge and Trap System consists of two single-ball rotameters
with adjustable needle valve mounted on a nylon plastic base with an 18"
long mounting rod support. The stainless steel purging head mounts onto
the support rod via an adjustable mounting clamp. The two inch diameter plastic
safety shield surrounds the glass sampling vial for visibility of the sample being
purged while providing additional safety during sample purging. An
additional stainless steel purge head, clamp, support rod, and safety
shield can be added to the other side of the system base to permit the
purging of two samples simultaneously.
The stainless steel purging head has two gas inlets. The top gas inlet
incorporates a needle adapter to seal the replaceable purging needle and
also provides for the introduction of the purging gas. The second gas inlet pro-
vides for an optional dry purge gas (or make up gas) to aid in removing water from
wet samples. If not required this dry purge gas connector is fitted with a 1/16" Swagelok
cap seal to seal off this line. The bottom fitting of the stainless steel purging head consists
of a 1/2" Swagelok fitting with a PTFE ferrule for the attachment of standard 1/2"
diameter sampling tubes.
The Complete Purge and Trap System consists
of the rotameters with adjustable needle valves
mounted on the nylon base, one 18" mounting rod,
one mounting clamp, one standard stainless steel
liquid purge head, one sparging needle, one 5ml
sample tube, one plastic safety shield, one
stainless steel cap with hole and PEEK® tubing for
gas connection lines.
The Flowmeter Stand consists of the two
single-ball rotameters with adjustable needle valve
mounted on the plastic base and one support rod.
To expand the system for an additional liquid sampling head,
accessories including a support rod, stainless steel purging head, plastic safety shield and
peek tubing are also available as listed on this and succeeding pages. Optional acces-
sories include heater blankets and temperature controllers for the controlled heating of
samples and digital mass flowmeters for the accurate measurement of system flows. It is
recommended that this system be used in conjunction with a temperature controlled water
bath.

he Stainless Steel Purging Heads are designed for use
with the S.I.S.
™
Purge and Trap System (described on
the previous page) and the S.I.S. GLT thermal desorp-
tion tubes. In addition, optional fittings are available to adapt the
purging heads for use with other manufacturers desorption or
sampling tubes. Two styles of the Stainless Steel Purging Heads
are available. The top fitting of both purge heads consists of a
1/16" fitting for the attachment of the sparging needle followed by
needle adapter to seal the needle in place and provide for the
attachment of the purging gas line. The side gas line is for the
use of a dry purge gas to aid in removing water from the desorp-
tion tube adsorbents or samples. When not required, this fitting
is capped with the 1/16" plug cap provided. The desorption tubes
are screwed into the end of the Stainless Steel Purging Head and
leak tight seals are made with the standard 1/4" PTFE washers.
The Standard Purging Head is the system that is supplied
with the Complete Purge and Trap System described previously.
The bottom fitting consists of a 1/2" Swagelok
™
fitting with PTFE
ferrules for the attachment of standard 1/2" diameter sample
tubes. An optional 12 mm Swagelok nut and 12 mm PTFE fer-
rule can be used with this fitting to adapt it for use with standard
12 mm sample tubes such as the disposable 12 mm tubes read-
ily available from many suppliers.
The Tube Style Purging Head contains of a 1/4" outside diam-
eter tube instead of the 1/2" fitting described above. This permits
the use of other sampling tubes which the user can easily adapt
to this fitting via standard 1/4" GC fittings, such as the 1/4" to 1/2"
union included with this purge head.
Two optional adapters screw into the purge head outlet to
adapt both of the purging heads for other manufacturers sam-

The Purge & Trap Glass Sample Tubes are constructed from borosilicate glass with 0.5" O.D. tube ends for mating with standard 1/2"
fittings. The tubes incorporate a foam breaker usable for the purging of foaming samples. Two sizes of tubes are available. The 5.0 ml
glass tubes are 5.75" long with a 1.0" diameter foam breaker. The 25.0 ml glass tubes are 7.60" long with a 1.6" diameter foam breaker.
The top connection on all tubes is 0.50" outside diameter.

Plastic Safety Shields for Sample Purging System
The Plastic Safety Shields have been constructed for the S.I.S. Purge & Trap System. The Shields are designed to slide into the
groove milled into the Purge & Trap System Base. Two heights of the safety shields are available. The 5.5" high shields are for use with
the 5.0 ml sampling tube or other sample tubes of similar size. The 7.5" high safety shields are for use with the 25 ml sampling tubes. In
addition to the standard straight safety shields, two additional models are available with slots in the top part of the back side for use with
sampling tubes with septa side arm ports.

Stainless Steel Sparging Needles for Sample Purging System
A
variety of lengths of the stainless steel sparging needles are available for the S.I.S
™
. Purge & Trap system. All needles are
constructed from stainless steel capillary tubing, 0.50 mm O.D. Approximately 10 mm from the flat end a metal hub is attached
for the seating and sealing of the needle in the fitting on the S.I.S. liquid purge head. The 5.0 ml sample tubes use the 16.0
cm long needles, and the 25.0 ml sample tubes use the 22.5 cm long needles. In addition the 11.5 cm long needles can be used with
standard 12 mm x 75 mm long disposable Pyrex glass test tubes.
Stainless Steel Metal Frit Spargers for the Purge & Trap System
For the most efficient sparging of liquid samples
T
he stainless steel metal frit spargers have been designed for use with the S.I.S. Purge and Trap system. They consist of a 1/16"
O.D. stainless steel capillary tube attached to a 5.0 micron porous stainless steel frit. This provides for a tiny bubble sparger to
efficiently sparge the volatiles from liquid samples. Two sparger lengths are available. The 16 cm length is for use with the S.I.S.
5.0 ml sample tubes and the 22.5 cm length is for use with the S.I.S. 25.0 ml sample tubes.

S.I.S. purge head adapter to
permit the use of the S.I.S. tube style liq-
uid purge head for purging liquid and solid
samples and trapping volatiles purged
from the samples onto the S.I.S. GLT
Thermal Desorption Tubes. The following
glassware all have 24/40 ground glass
necks. The PTFE Purge Head Adapter
seals into this ground glass fitting and its
1/4" diameter 'O' Ring seal accepts the
Tube Style Liquid Purge Head. This Tube
Style Purge Head described previously
permits both the introduction of the purge
gas to purge the volatiles from the sample
and the trapping of these volatiles on the
GLT desorption tubes.

he new Model CT101 is a compact bench top temperature controller that can be
utilized to supply the heating and temperature controlling of a variety of labora-
tory accessories. The console is compact, only 5" high x 6" wide x 6" deep. It
consists of a high quality Watlow controller with a 10 amp relay output. Feedback and
temperature control can be accurately controlled via a standard J type thermocouple (iron-
constantan). Temperature can be regulated and monitored via the LED display to +/- 1°C.
The controller is normally set up to monitor in degrees C but can be modified for degrees
F. A switch on the front panel controls the total power to the system and a separate switch
turns off the heater power. Standard features include illuminated power switches, a 3-wire
fused cord and a fused output receptacle.
The back panel of the controller contains two separate fuses, one for the total system
and the second for the heater output. A 110 volt twist type receptacle provides the outlet
for a wide variety of heater accessories. To modify existing heaters for this plug, a twist
type plug is available. The thermocouple is attached via a standard thermocouple plug.
Accessory heater plugs & thermocouple plugs are available for connection of other
heaters and J-Thermocouples.

he Heater Sleeves for the Purge & Trap System are
available in two sizes for the standard sample purging
system tubes supplied by S.I.S. They are designed to fit
these sampling tubes with the foam break-
ers. Other sampling tubes can be used,
provided they fit tightly into the heater
sleeves to provide good surface
contact thereby providing for uni-
form sample heating. The
outer facing of the case is
constructed of a new
aluminized
fiber-
glass
insulated
material, for a
p r o f e s s i o n a l
appearance. The
heating
coils
inside the blanket
sleeve consist of
durable, multi-stranded resistance
wire that is insulated and knitted
over a large surface area into the
inner wall of the heater sleeve. In
addition a J type thermocouple is
encased inside the heater sleeve
for accurate temperature mea-
surement and for use in tempera-
ture control when used with S.I.S.
temperature controller. Both the
24" heater leads and thermocouple leads are encased in a fiber-
glass sleeve and terminate in a 110 volt twist plug for the heater
and a thermocouple plug for the thermocouple. Both of these fit-
tings plug into the back of the S.I.S. temperature controller. A
Velcro hanging strap is attached to the heater sleeve for use in
attaching the blanket to the purging system. When used with the
S.I.S. temperature controller temperatures can be maintained to
within 2°C from room temperature to 125°C.

he Purge and Trap Apparatus* is widely used
for the isolation of pollutants in soil, sediment,
waste water, and other solid and liquid samples by
purging a clean gas over and thru the sample contained there-
in and trapping the purged volatiles on adsorbent traps. This
device has been modified by S.I.S. to trap these volatiles on the
S.I.S. GLT Thermal Desorption Tubes. The 1000 ml version of this
apparatus can purge and trap benzene in water down to 1 ppb
using conventional GC or GC/MS techniques.
A variety of purge gas tubes can be used including a plain 1/4"
diameter glass tube, 1/4" stainless steel tube, or the diffusion tube
which includes a fine frit on the end of the tube to deliver the purge
gas in small bubbles to better purge the volatiles from liquid sam-
ples. These tubes can be fitted to the purge gas source via
Swagelok connectors with PTFE ferrules or via inert plastic tubing.
The S.I.S. GLT Thermal Desorption tubes are screwed into the
adapter fitting and a seal made via the standard PTFE washers.
This adapter in turn fits into the plastic adapter on the Wheaton
glassware.
