Pharmaceuticals
The residual solvents, manufacturing precursors, contami-
nants and decomposition products in pharmaceutical samples
can be easily detected and identified using the Direct Thermal
Extraction Technique.
Sample: 2.0 mg. crushed aspirin was placed inside the GLT desorption tube
Thermal Desorption: Block temperature: 100°C, Purge flow: 2.0 ml/min He,
Desorption time: 10.0 min. Initial column trap temperature: -40°C
Column: DB-5, 25 meter x 0.25 mm I.D., 0.25 u film, -40° to 280°C at 10° / min.

Packing materials including plastics provide a unique appli-
cation of the Direct Thermal Extraction Technique to analyze the
surface contaminants on these materials.
Forensic Applications
The Direct Thermal Extraction Technique can be used to ana-
lyze and compare forensic samples ranging from vegetation to
physical evidence.
Sample: 2.0 sq. in. piece of a clear plastic food wrap was placed inside the GLT desorption tube.
Thermal Desorption: Block temperature: 100°C, Purge flow:2.0 ml/min He,
Desorption time: 10.0 min. Initial column trap temperature: -40°C
Column: DB-5, 25 meter x 0.25 mm I.D., 0.25 u film, -40° to 280°C at 10°/min.
Sample: 250 sq. mm. of recycled cardboard was placed inside the GLT desorption tube.
Thermal Desorption: Block temperature: 200°C, Purge flow: 2.0 ml/min He,
Desorption time: 10.0 min. Initial column trap temperature: -40°C
Column: DB-5, 25 meter x 0.25 mm I.D., 0.25 u film, -40° to 280°C at 10°/min.
Sample: 2 small threads from a Molotov cocktail were placed inside the GLT desorption tube.
Thermal Desorption: Block temperature: 150°C, Purge flow: 6.0 ml/min He,
Desorption time: 10.0 min. Initial column trap temperature: -10°C
Column: SPB, 30 meter x 0.75 mm I.D., 1.0 u film, -10° to 250°C at 12°/min.
