D
irect Probe sample analysis can be accomplished on the
Agilent 5973 &5975 MSD with the new Direct Probe Inlet
System from Scientific Instrument Services
™
. The probe
inlet mounts onto the GC/MS transfer line port and uses an indexed
probe introduction guide to permit the direct insertion and removal
of the probe into the MSD source without venting the MSD or scor-
ing the probe rod. The probe can be either heated ballistically at
ramp rates in excess of 500 degrees per minute or can be temper-
ature programmed with up to 25 ramp rate levels. The probe tem-
peratures, ramp rates, hold times, start and stop are all PC con-
trolled and fully integrated with the Agilent ChemStation
™
software.
This permits the storage of the probe analysis parameters in the
sample data files and the method files.
The SIS
™
probe for the Agilent 5973 & 5975 MSD is only 1/4" in
diameter which enables it to easily slide through the probe sealing
system and into the MSD. It is light in weight and comfortably fits in
your hand for ease of use. The Probe tip with sample vial can be
heated up to 450°C either ballistically or in the programmable
mode. In the ballistic mode it will ramp up to temperature in excess
of 500 degrees per minute or alternatively it can be used in the
temperature ramp mode which has 25 levels of ramping capabilities
to provide for the ultimate control of probe tip temperature. For
cooling the probe, compressed air is used. This permits the cooling
of the probe after sample analysis and before the probe is removed
from the MSD through the vacuum seals. This prevents damage to
the probe inlet vacuum seals.
The probe tip incorporates a small spring to gently hold the
sample vial in place. The probe is designed for using glass flared
sample vials. These flared sample vials permit the efficient
introduction of samples (both solid and liquid) into the sample vials
and permit the easy insertion and removal of the sample vials from
the probe tip without breakage.

Replacement Inlet Seal Set
Probe Inlet System
The SIS
™
Probe Inlet System mounts on the GC/MS Transfer
line port on the Agilent 5973 & 5975 MSD to permit the quick and
easy introduction of the SIS 1/4" diameter direct probe through the
MSD Vacuum manifold and into the MSD source. It incorporates an
indexed dual guide rod system that accurately guides the probe
through the vacuum system valves. The guide rods are indexed at
three positions in addition to the fully inserted and fully extracted
positions.
Load - fully extended - probe load position
Stop 1 - at the first vacuum seal - to permit the rough pump-out
of the probe inlet seals
Stop 2 - at the second vacuum seal - to enable the user to open
the isolation valve
Stop 3 - 1 cm from the source - cooling position after the
sample is finished
Run - fully inserted - sample analysis Run position
After the probe locks in at one of the indexed stop positions, the
lock release lever is pulled up to enable the probe to be inserted to
the next indexed position. This accurate positioning and locking of
the probe in set positions prevents closing the isolation valve on
the probe (which would score or bend the probe rod).
The probe sealing system consists of the SIS dual PTFE seal-
ing system which will provide for excellent vacuum sealing around
the probe rod along with long seal life. If the seals need to be
replaced a seal extraction tool is included to enable the quick
removal and replacement of the seals without venting the MSD.
The 1/4" turn ball isolation valve permits the introduction of the
probe through this valve and into the MSD source.
PC Window for the Control of the SIS Direct Probe
for the Agilent 5973 & 5975 MSD
The user interface for the control and monitoring of the direct
probe for the Agilent 5973 & 5975 probe is via software on the PC.
This window is fully integrated with the Agilent ChemStation™ soft-
ware. The PC software controls the direct probe electronics con-
sole via an RS232 interface to download the values entered
through the PC window to control the actual temperature of the
probe. The probe can be operated in the ballistic mode with ramp
rates greater than 500° per minute. In the programmable mode the
user inputs the ramp rate, the final temperature and the duration
time (hold time). Temperature program rates up to 400° per minute
can be used to control the temperature of the probe between 25
and 450 °C. Up to 25 levels of programmable ramping steps are
permitted through this PC interface. A visual graphic presentation of
the temperature profile indicates the ramp and hold temperatures
as a function of time. In addition the status portion of the screen
shows the probe status, time of analysis, the target and actual
probe temperatures and the power requirements to heat the probe
(Heating Load). Controls are also present to permit the start and
cool down (stop) of the probe from the PC window. These start and
stop manual controls are also available on the front of the electron-
ics console. In addition to heating the probe, the probe is automat-
ically cooled at the end of the sample analysis using compressed
air controlled by a solenoid valve in the direct probe electronics
console. This will cool the probe to enable the removal of the probe
through the vacuum sealing system.

DCI/DEP Probe
T
he S.I.S. DCI/DEP probe is designed for use on the Agilent 5989 mass spectrometer as well as other instruments which use a
1/2" probe inlet. The DCI probe utilizes a replaceable filament wire at the end of the probe to both hold and heat the sample. In
this technique a current is supplied to the filament wire which directly heats the sample. The temperature of the sample is
controlled by limiting the value of the current supplied to the filament. The probe tip filaments simply plug in for easy replacement by the
user. The probe comes with the valve and fittings necessary for introduction of the CI reagent gas through the probe.

power supply is designed for use with the S.I.S. DCI probe. An LCD display shows all necessary parameters
and the current status of the probe. Data system remote start capability is included.
Glass vial
Calibration Gas Probe
T
hese new Calibration Gas Probes are designed for the quick and accurate introduction of liquid or gas samples directly into the
Mass Spec source via the probe inlet. The calibration gas or fluid (or any liquid sample) is placed in the removable glass vial
in the handle of the probe. The calibration vials can be quickly and easily changed to permit the analysis of multiple liquid sam-
ples. The vials hold approximately 2.0 ml of liquid. The rate of flow of the sample into the mass spec source is regulated via the microfine
metering valve on the end of the probe handle.
The Calibration Gas Probe offers the advantage for the analysis of multiple liquid samples quickly and easily. In addition, when you
are done calibrating the mass spectrometer with the calibration fluid of choice, the probe (and the source of
calibration fluid) is removed from the mass spectrometer.

Standard Direct Probe
T
he S.I.S. direct insertion probe, for use on the Agilent 5989 and other mass spectrometers which have a 1/2" probe inlet, pro-
vides the user with greater flexibility and much faster ramp rates than the standard Agilent DIP probe. This is accomplished by
positioning the heater at the tip of the probe where it is in direct contact with the sample vial. The maximum ramp rate is approx-
imately 200°C/min. when used with our separate temperature controller. The controller is equipped with a remote start switch and cable
to allow the remote starting of the mass spectrometer from the PC-1

controller. The probe design provides for much faster heating of the
sample and also faster cool down of the probe which allows for faster sample throughput. The maximum temperature of the probe is
400°C.
Scientific Instrument Services
™
has developed a new High Temperature Direct Insertion Probe (HT-DIP). The probes can be used from
ambient temperature up to 800°C with ballistic temperature ramp of over 700°C/min. Available for Agilent and Thermo Systems.
