A
wide variety of materials are utilized for ferrules for use on
gas chromatographs. The chromatographer must deter-
mine the type of ferrule to use based on the properties of
the ferrule material and the chromatography conditions.
Scientific Instrument Services

provides a wide selection of fer-
rules manufactured by SGE and S.I.S.

Ferrules For Gas Chromatographs
Dimensions of fused silica capillary columns
(I.D. vs O.D.) for selection of ferrules
1. Graphitized Vespel may shrink and loosen at
subambient temperatures.
2. Graphitized Vespel will expand and shrink with
changing temperature. Connections should be
retightened a few times when first installed until the
ferrule has settled.
3. Function of ferrule cross sectional area. (1/16"
ferrules may be acceptable while 1/8" and 1/4" ferrule
may be unacceptably permeable).
4. Function of ferrule cross sectional area.
5. Graphite absorbs organics. Avoid contact with flow
path.
6. Small amounts of graphite can enter capillary tubing
during installation. Remove the first 2-3cm of tubing
after insertion to ensure that no particles remain in
the flow path.
7. Due to the hardness of graphitized vespel the ferrule
should be closely matched to the tubing OD to obtain
a good seal.
8. Graphitized Vespel ferrules can sometimes be
reused, but normally will seize.

T
hese ferrules are constructed
from glass filled PTFE, giving the
ferrules the sealing properties of
PTFE but minimizing the flow problems
normally encountered with pure PTFE. All
ferrules fit the standard Swagelok, Parker,
SGE and other GC fittings. Glass filled
PTFE ferrules are ideal for use on mass
spectrometer jet separators, glass and
metal GC columns and for glass and fused
silica capillary columns.

In addition to the performance features of graphite ferrules
detailed above, the significant advantage of one piece ferrules
is they do not require a back ferrule.
They can be used in Swagelok type fittings and in SGE fit-
tings that use the SGE extended capture nuts (SSNE-16,
SSNE-8, SSNE-4).
SGE OGF - One Piece - combination front and back Graphite Ferrule
S
GE graphite ferrules are 99.95% pure graphite and are
extremely easy to use, for obtaining reliable leak free
connections.
Graphite ferrules can be used with all types of tubing including
glass and are extensively used in SGE injection systems, valves,
fittings and unions. Because graphite does not stick or bind onto the
tubing, graphite may be removed and reused.
Note:
These ferrules are physically soft and for best results
should be tightened “finger tight” plus “half a turn” at a time until gas
tight. This method will ensure the ferrule is reusable and prevent
overtightening which will cause the graphite to flow.
GFF type ferrules may be used with Swagelok type unions, but
back ferrules are required. Back ferrules are not necessary with
SGE unions.

SGE Graphitized Vespel Ferrules 350°C-GVF - the Standard for GC/MS
T
hese Vespel ferrules contain 15% graphite and are ideal for
glass and fused silica capillary columns. Because these
ferrules are harder, they do not distort and flow as much as
other types and are ideal for butt type connections where the flowpath
might need to be disconnected.
For connecting fused silica tubing we recommend a ferrule size
slightly larger than the O.D. of the column to be selected.
No-hole ferrules are available and can be drilled to suit a particu-
lar application or to seal off a fitting.
Two-hole ferrules can be utilized to split the
column effluent between two detectors or one
detector and a collector. The two-hole ferrule
can also be used for inlet splitting between two
fused silica columns.
Three-hole ferrules are also available for
multiple splitting. To suit the SGE range of mini
unions, special small graphitized vespel fer-
rules are available.
