Molecular Jet SeparatorsAll Glass Single Stage Molecular Jet Separators for GC/MS Interfacing
The SGE all-glass single stage molecular jet separator for GC/MS interfacing incorporates a patented system of construction which allows accurate/reproducible jet sizes, alignment and spacing and can be temperature cycled to 450 degrees C depending on the type of connections used. It overcomes the problem of peak broadening or tailing effects experienced with other separators such as the glass frit, membrane separator and so on. Separator efficiency, although dependent on molecular weight, is independent of the type of molecule rendering the separator equally effective for polar, non polar and labile samples including steroids and insecticides. The separator can also be used with capillary columns, providing make-up gas is used to optimize flow requirements. A standard model suitable for optimum input flows of 20-30 ml/min. of Helium is available having an inlet jet of 0.1 mm, an outlet jet of 0.25 mm and jet spacing of 0.35 mm. Other sizes are available on request. The optimum flow of 20-30 ml/min. produces typical enrichment ratios (N) of 20-25 and yields (Y) of up to 30% with, for example, methyl stearate. The standard separator is ideally suited for ion source pumping systems enabling MS input flows of 0.1 to 0.2 atmos. ml/min. or less. N and Y values largely depend on jet sizes and spacing. However, in practice they also depend on other factors including pumping speeds of the separator backing pump and ion diffusion pump. For this reason the above performance data can only be regarded as approximate guidelines. Better results may be achieved with a separator used under optimum conditions.
