source
Not an exchange program - your source is cleaned and repaired
and returned to you.
Scientific Instrument Services now offers a service of mass spectrometer
source cleaning. Since we first advertised this service more than
one year ago, many of our customers have taken advantage of this
new service. This is NOT an exchange program. The same source
that we receive from you is cleaned and returned back to you ready
to install into your mass spectrometer.
24 Hour Turn Around on Source Cleaning
For rush 24 hour turn around, sources should be sent to S.I.S.
via Federal Express or other overnight carrier. Once received,
they will be cleaned and returned the next day via an overnight
carrier such as Federal Express. Please include your purchase
order. We can clean and service most models of mass spectrometer
sources many of which are listed below. If your source is not
one of the ones listed below please contact us.
For sources not listed below please include a copy of the manufacturers
assembly instructions and schematic of the source assembly when
the parts are sent in for repair.
Service Notes
The source cleaning article describes
in detail the steps and equipment used in the cleaning and repair
of all the MS sources that we service at SIS. All parts are thoroughly
cleaned, rinsed in solvents and baked out in an oven and ready
for installation into the mass spectrometer. Most ceramic insulators
will be cleaned or replaced if broken (exception noted below).
If old filaments are included with the source, they are repaired
and are accurately aligned on the source using an optical video
microscope system. If metal parts need to be replaced, this may
delay return delivery until we can obtain replacement parts from
the manufacturer and additional charged may be incurred. If the
source heaters are sent in with the source, additional charges
will be incurred if these items are damaged and need additional
repairs or replacement. If available, a copy of your source assembly/disassembly
schematic from your mass spec manual should be sent in with your
source.
All the mass spectrometer sources listed below have been repaired by S.I.S. in
the last few months. If your mass spectrometer source is not listed below, it can still
be repaired by S.I.S. Send your source with old filament(s) attached, along
with your purchase order to:

Finnigan MAT 4500/TSQ Source Cleaning
Cleaning of the Finnigan MAT 4500/TSQ Source begins with the complete
disassembly of the source. Cleaning and polishing of all metal
parts is followed by thorough washing and bake out in an oven.
All ceramic insulators are sandblasted followed by solvent washing
and bake out. Anodized aluminum insulators are washed in solvent
and baked out. If these insulators are scratched or broken, they
will need to be replaced at additional cost. The filament, collector
and heater are cleaned and repaired if broken. These parts are
not replaced if missing or damaged beyond repair. Replacement
of these parts will incur additional costs. After all parts have
been repaired, cleaned and baked out, the source is reassembled.
The filament is accurately aligned over the ion entrance hole
and clamped in place. The source is checked for resistance leaks
as well as visual alignment of all parts. If the source is shipped
with the source mounting flange assembly, the source is mounted
onto this flange and all leads are connected and checked for continuity.
If leads need to be replace, an additional charge will be incurred.
Parts Cleaned: entire source block, lens, insulators, collector,
heater, filament and ion volume assembly.
Parts Repaired: Filament, collector and heater.
Parts replaced if missing or broken: Lens retainer springs.
Not included in standard source cleaning price: replacement of
castle spacer lens and lens ring retainer ceramic or anodized
aluminum insulators. Also not included are the replacement of
the filament, collector and heater assembly or any other missing
mechanical parts.
Shipping in for Repair: Normally the source block and associated
parts are shipped in for repair. The entire flange mounting assembly
is not normally shipped for repair due to the heavy weight and
delicate nature of this component. All source parts should be
thoroughly packaged with packing material to avoid damage during
shipment. If the Flange assembly is sent in for repair, it should
be mounted on the original plastic mounting bracket supplied with
the mass spec. This assembly should then be thoroughly packaged
with packaging material and then double boxed to avoid damage
in shipment. This flange assembly is very delicate and easily
damaged in shipment.
