listed, should be regarded as absolute limits. Your routine operating pressures should include a suitable safety margin based
on your specific application and equipment.

Copper Tubing

Flexible 1/8" copper is a convenient, non-permeable means of supplying GC carrier gas, Helium for sparging HPLC reservoirs,

detector gas supplies, etc. Bulk copper tubing should be solvent-cleaned before use to assure that it is free of contamination. Rinse the
tubing with Methanol and Methylene Chloride, then connect it to a clean gas supply and heat the tubing to remove residual solvent.

Stainless Steel Tubing - Chromatography grade - 316

Stainless steel is the most common material for most routine HPLC applications. Its high strength (burst pressure

>8000 psi), general inertness and resistance to corrosion make it the standard material for HPLC plumbing. Stainless
steel can corrode under extremes of pH, and it can bind proteins as well as contribute metal ions to mobile phas-
es. These properties make stainless steel incompatible with the analysis of many biomolecules and the use
of buffers with high ionic strength. Bulk stainless steel tubing from SIS is solvent-cleaned and baked prior
to shipment.

316 Stainless Steel Pre-cut Tubing

These pieces are cut with an electronic discharge method which leaves the ends perfectly flat, open, and burr-free. Precut stainless

tubing is passivated, cleaned and rinsed.

PEEK Tubing

ts strength and inertness make PEEK (Poly Ether Ether Ketone) the obvious substitute for stainless steel when biocompatibility is
an issue. SIS offers two types of PEEK tubing: Solid color coded tubing, and natural tan tubing with a color coded stripe. The
striped material is recommended for maximum chemical resistance and biocompatibility, as the dye used for the stripe never comes

in contact with the fluid stream. PEEK is very chemically resistant, and can withstand halide salts and buffers of high ionic strength which
can degrade stainless steel. PEEK does not contribute metal ions or provide protein binding sites the way stainless steel can. Certain
organic solvents including Methylene Chloride, DMSO, and THF will cause PEEK to swell and will result in lower burst pressure.
Concentrated nitric and sulfuric acids will attack the polymer, although 30% nitric acid may be used for passivating.

Biocompatible Ti frits

he VICI Jour in-line filter traps fine and other particulates
from samples and mobile phases before they can dam-
age valuable instruments and columns. The PEEK body

and Ti encased filter elements give complete biocompatibility and
chemical resistance. In addition, the design has virtually no hold-up
volume, so these filters can be used in analytical applications with
virtually no band broadening or loss of efficiency.

Last Drop filter/sparger

The Last Drop filter/sparger combines filtration and sparging in a single unit. The PTFE housing con-

tains a mobile phase filter with either a stainless steel or a PTFE filter element. The filter/sparger features
a PEEK tripod connector for the solvent line, and a nut and ferrule for the sparging line. The filter element
is 2.5 µm; the sparger is 10 µm.

Biocompatible filters

This all PEEK filter can be placed in any 1/16" line, providing filtration to 0.5 microns. The filter

can be changed without tools, since both the filter housing and fittings are hand tightened.
Replacement elements are made of PEEK-encapsulated titanium.

PTFE Tubing

A very chemically inert Fluorocarbon suitable for low-pressure

applications. PTFE is a naturally translucent white material,
however SIS also offers this tubing in black for light sensitive
applications. PTFE is gas-permeable, and will result in diffusion of
atmospheric gases into fluids carried inside the tubing.

ETFE (TEFZEL

) Tubing

A Fluorocarbon with a higher burst pressure than PTFE and

excellent chemical resistance, especially to chloride salts. Tefzel
may swell when used with organic solvents, and in that case
operating pressures should be restricted to under 70 bar (1000 psi).

FEP (Fluoridated Ethylene-
Propylene) Tubing

This material has excellent resistance to buffers and mobile

phases with higher ionic strength. FEP tubing is recommended for
low pressure and ion chromatography applications.

PFA Tubing

Another very inert Fluorocarbon, this material has extra-low

permeability. PFA should be used when diffusion through the tubing
wall is an issue.

Nylon Tubing

An economical choice for air, nitrogen, water, and other

non-critical gas and liquid service in the laboratory. Not
recommended for Hydrogen service. Available in opaque, white,
and black. Working temperature range -5 to 100°C.

Viton

Tubing

A Fluoropolymer with good chemical and high temperature

resistance. Usable at temperatures from -20 to 250°C.

Tubing Clip

This convenient piece makes sure 1/8" and 1/16" tubing stays

put in bottles or beakers.

Corner Forms for PEEK Tubing

Form perfect 90° or 180° turns in PEEK tubing easily with these

accessories designed to bend the material at a radius that will not
compromise its strength.
