Standard Filament Repairs

ormally filaments sent in for repair are repaired using

the same materials and filament geometry that was

used in the original manufacture of the mass spec-

trometer filaments. This is our standard filament repair unless you

request a different type of repair such as the other configurations

described below.

SIS repairs both the old style Ion Trap (mounted on the flange

base) as well as the newer style ion trap filaments. The filaments

are repaired to original specifications using rhenium ribbon.

These filaments cannot be repaired with SISAlloy at the present

time. Each assembly (two filaments) is counted as one repair

when calculating the cost. Broken posts cannot be repaired.

Ion Trap Filament Repair

NEW - SISAlloy® Filament Repairs

SIS introduces their new Yttria Rhenium alloy filaments for mass

spectrometers. SIS has spent more than three years developing

this new alloy of Rhenium for mass spectrometer filament repair

and manufacture. In these studies we have discovered that by

alloying Rhenium with a small concentration of Yttria, the crystal

structure of the Rhenium material was altered, which resulted in a

stronger filament that is much less susceptible to warping. The

new filaments perform electrically identical to pure Rhenium fila-

ments. This alloy is now used in a variety of wire sizes and coil

sizes as described on page A8.

Your existing filaments can be repaired with this Yttria/Rhenium wire in

place of the standard Rhenium. SISAlloy repaired filaments are

available for most models of the Agilent, Varian, & Thermo Mass

Spectrometers. Other filaments will be available in the near future.

We currently have this alloy available in wire form only with diam-

eters of 0.003", 0.004", 0.005", 0.0055", 0.006", and 0.008". Other

sizes may be available in the future.

SISAlloy Filament Repair

Agilent/Varian/Bruker Coil Filament

We recommend repairing this coil shaped filament with the

SISAlloy material. To repair this filament we first make the coil fila-

ment to the correct dimensions and then anneal the filament in a

high temperature furnace to minimize warping. We have had sev-

eral customers use these SISAlloy repaired filaments with claims

of greatly increased filament life. OEM #9300000

Repairs (Thermo Part # 70001-60287 &

We recommend repairing these pin shaped filaments with

SISAlloy wire although we can repair them with standard rhenium

if desired. The pictures below are from a paper we presented at

the 2011 ASMS meeting comparing this standard rhenium filament

to our new SISAlloy material. This study clearly demonstrates the

improvement in filament performance with the SISAlloy wire.
