Cryogenic Vials
Wheaton cryogenic vials, caps, vial racks, and freezer boxes are designed for simple identi-
fication and effortless handling. With Wheaton plastic Cryules
®
, both the closures and tubes
are manufactured from medical-grade polypropylene with the same coefficient of expan-
sion; this further enhances the leak proof qualities of these vials at changing temperatures.
All Wheaton Cryules and racks are autoclavable up to 121°C. When autoclaving plastic
Cryules, the cap must be loosened or removed to allow pressure equalization upon cooling;
this prevents pressure build-up within the vial.
The Wheaton glass Cryules are made from Wheaton 33 low extractable borosilicate glass,
(that conforms to ASTM Type I, Class A and USP Type I requirements) which can be
hermetically sealed.
Use caution; do not use cryogenic containers for storage directly in contact with the liquid
phase of liquid nitrogen; use in gas phase only. Always use appropriate safety equipment
such as gloves, face shields, and safety cabinets to protect personnel when removing
Cryules from cryogenic gases.

Liquid nitrogen (LN
2
): liquid density at the triple point is
0.807 g/mL, is inert, colorless, odorless, non-corrosive,
nonflammable, and extremely cold.
Liquid nitrogen boils at -196°C, and is a cryogenic fluid
which is potentially capable of causing rapid frostbite on
contact with living tissue.
Cryopreservation is a process where cells or whole
tissues are preserved by cooling to low sub-zero
temperatures, such as (typically) 77 K or −196°C
(the boiling point of liquid nitrogen).
When cryoprotectant solutions are not used, the cells
being preserved are often damaged due to freezing
during the approach to low temperatures or warming to
room temperature.
A cryoprotectant is a substance that is used to protect
biological tissue from freezing damage (damage due
to ice formation).
Cryoprotectants act like antifreeze: they lower the
freezing temperature. They also increase the viscosity.
Instead of crystallizing, the syrupy solution turns into an
amorphous ice.
