Finnigan Movable Transfer Line

The movable transfer line (Finnigan #40006-60320) for the Finnigan 4500/4600 series mass spectrometers can be repaired or modified by S.I.S. Repair of broken, damaged or clogged parts can be effected to improve the performance of the assembly according to your requirements. All repaired assemblies are helium leak tested to assure vacuum tight seals and welds on all parts of the movable transfer line assembly. Each type or segment of the various repairs available is described below. In some cases, multiple repairs are included in a part number and price. If not, each segment of the repair should be ordered by the appropriate part number.

Custom modifications or redesign of the movable transfer line is available from S.I.S. to suit your particular requirements. Modifications can include, (1) replacement of arms or fittings, (2) sealing off of arms or fittings, (3) changing dimensions or relative position of parts, (4) extension of the center fitting and, (5) custom mounting brackets. Movable Transfer Line Cleaning & Testing

The two side arms on the center feedthru line often become clogged with column packing or fused silica capillary tubing.

Our technicians can usually unclog these lines. As part of this service, the entire movable transfer line is helium leak checked to assure proper sealing of all connections and welds, and also to assure that the two internal metal bellows are fully operational with no vacuum leaks. If vacuum leaks are detected at any location, they will need to be repaired as described below.

In some instances, the side arms cannot be unclogged due to broken glass in the interior of the GLT, and in this case the GLT side arms would need to be replaced as described.

Repair of GLT Fittings

If the GLT tubing of the side arms are not damaged, but the welds are leaking, they can be repaired and vacuum welded in our shops. In this repair we will clean and reweld the four joints on the GLT tubing. If the GLT is damaged it will need to be replaced as described below. The repaired unit is helium leak checked after repair to assure good vacuum seals on all welds.

Replacement of GLT Side Arms

Either or both GLT side arms can be replaced if they become damaged or clogged. The GLT is replaced with new tubing and vacuum welded to the fittings. The repaired unit is helium leak checked after repair to assure good vacuum seals on all welds.

Removal of GLT Side Arms

S.I.S. can remove both side arms completely for those doing capillary work only. The lines are removed, the holes sealed, and the entire assembly is leak checked.

Fitting Replacement

!/16" Swagelok Fitting Vs 1/16" SGE Capillary Fitting

The 1/16" center capillary fitting can be replaced with either the standard 1/16" Swagelok fitting or with an SGE 1/16" capillary fitting. The old fitting is removed and drilled out and the new fitting is vacuum welded to the head assembly. Also the 1/4" fittings can be replaced with new Swagelok fittings.

Internal Metal Bellows Replacement

S.I.S. can repair the bellows assembly in the movable transfer line. This repair consists of disassembly of the transfer line and micro-TIG welding of the replacement metal bellows inside the metal housing. The entire assembly is leak checked after repair to assure leak-free operation.

Mounting Bracket Replacement

S.I.S. can provide a replacement stainless steel bracket into which the ¼" Swagelok fittings of the side arms are mounted. We have constructed our mounting bracket out of stainless steel (instead of the original aluminum bracket from Finnigan) to permit the Swagelok side arm fittings to be welded to the bracket and thus prevent any movement or turning of the Swagelok fittings when the nuts are tightened.

The mounting bracket can be purchased separately for your own installation or it can be ordered as a complete repair of the side arms. This complete side arm repair (REP35-D) includes, (1) replacement of the two GLT lines, (2) replacement of the two ¼" Swagelok fittings, (3) installation and welding of the mounting bracket to the ¼" Swagelok nuts and, (4) helium leak testing of the entire assembly for vacuum tight operation.
