Finnigan MAT Mass Spectrometer Probe Repairs

Scientific Instrument Services has the facilities, equipment, and staff to repair, modify, or manufacture most direct exposure probes for mass spectrometers. Our equipment includes Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding for precision vacuum tight welds of the stainless steel parts. The thermospray welding equipment permits coating of rods on heater coils with ceramic insulation. Our machine shop also contains lathes, milling machines, drill presses, coil winders, cut-off saws, and other machine shop tools and equipment to enable us to manufacture and repair a wide variety of mass spec probes. A description of our facilities is expanded upon in the front section of this catalog. As a part of all repairs or manufacture of mass spec probes, we helium-leak check all assemblies on a Helium Leak Tester to assure good vacuum seals of all joints and welds. The various Finnigan MAT probes routinely repaired are described below on this page.

Our repair of the Finnigan MAT 3200 series probes includes complete disassembly of the probe, replacement of the interior heater coil, thermocouple, sample vial well, and leads. The probe tip is then welded back together and the shaft is polished to remove minor scratches, assuring a better vacuum seal. As a trial step, the probe is helium leak tested to assure leak-free operation. This repair is described in Vol. I of Mass Spec Handbook of Service.

Finnigan MAT DEP Probe Repair

The design of the Finnigan MAT DEP probe permits easy disassembly, repair, and reassembly. This is unlike most other mass spec probes which are very difficult if not impossible to repair. An article on how to perform this repair appeared in the March 1984 issue of The Mass Spec Source. These repairs can also be done by S.I.S. if you prefer not to attempt them yourself. S.I.S. also has the facilities and parts to manufacture and replace the various components if they are damaged beyond repair.

Finnigan MAT 4000 series probes can now be fully repaired. The repair includes the complete disassembly of the probe, replacement or repair of all internal parts including heater coil, thermocouple, platinum resistance thermometer, and ceramic insulators. After repair, all probes are helium leak checked for good vacuum seals of all joints and welds. Repaired probes are fully operational and guaranteed for 30 days.
